Blackbutt Flooring

Blackbutt Timber Floor

About the Blackbutt Tree

Blackbutt, also known as ‘Eucalyptus pilularis’, is one of the highest value timbers in Australia.  It is predominantly grown in coastal New South Whales and southern Queensland. Blackbutt trees can grow up to 40 metres tall, sometimes even taller, and can measure up to 3 metres in diameter.

This versatile tree gets its name from the rough bark at the base of the tree, which is usually charred black from past bushfires. Blackbutt is considered as a ‘half bark’ as it has a rough and fibrous bark on the lower portion of the trunk, whereas the upper trunk is characterised by its smooth whitish yellow appearance.

This amazing tree can live for more than 200 years and has a Janka rating of 9.1.

Blackbutt Timber

Blackbutt timber is incredibly easy and versatile to work with; it is accepting of stains, oil and polishes and is also known to machine well. Its versatility and strength make it a top choice for timber cladding or timber framing in home construction. Due to its density and Janka rating of 9.1, it is naturally resistant to termites. There are numerous applications of Blackbutt timber such as timber framing, cladding, internal and external flooring, joinery, decking, landscaping, furniture and structural applications – the opportunities are endless when it comes to using Blackbutt timber. With a uniform and moderately-course textured grain, it makes a beautiful feature when used in a visible way.

In construction, unseasoned and sawn timber can be used for framing, fascias and barge boards, internal and external flooring, lining and joinery, as well as for fencing, landscaping and retaining walls. It can also be used for quality outdoor furniture, boats (keel and framing components, planking and decking), and carriages.

Blackbutt in Flooring

Blackbutt solid timber flooring is a durable, high performing and visually beautiful floor solution. Because timber floors can be sanded and finished repeatedly when they show signs of wear and tear, they can last a lifetime.  Installed using a hidden nail technique where the nails are driven into the tongue and are obscured by the next board, authentic Blackbutt hardwood flooring is a luxury floor with an utterly seamless finish.

Blackbutt is also the woodgrain of choice for many floating timber, hybrid, laminate and vinyl floors. In an engineered floating timber floor strips of Blackbutt hardwood form layers. Hybrid, laminate and vinyl floors use realistic digital imagery to give the appearance of naturally beautiful Blackbutt.

Available in a variety of colours, Blackbutt is easy to match with many interior design styles. It is resistant to fires, termites and bugs and floors will rarely change in appearance. It is easy to maintain, only needing a broom and quick mop to get rid of dirt and debris. When Blackbutt timber flooring is polished, it appears beautifully shiny and smooth, making it a popular choice for homeowners who want premium quality products and finishes.

At Back To Timber, we offer a huge variety of Blackbutt timber flooring options. Check out some of our favourites below.
