About the Spotted Gum Tree

The Australian spotted gum is a majestic Australian hardwood tree, grown in Coastal New South Wales and South East Queensland.  The spotted gum can grow to between 35 and 60 metres tall, and 1 to 1.5 metres in diameter.

Spotted Gum Timber

Spotted gum is one of the most used hardwood timbers in Australia. The texture of spotted gum is moderately course, with an interlocked and wavy grain, which makes it aesthetically pleasing. Heartwood shades vary from light brown to dark brown, and the sapwood is much paler. The wood is slightly greasy and gum veins are common.

Spotted gum timber has a wide range of uses including; decking, timber mouldings, cladding, pergolas and flooring, and more. Decks made from spotted gum are a popular as the timber is both practical and beautiful. Internal and external doors made from spotted gum ensure a stylish and practical look that will not compromise on strength and structural performance.

Spotted gum is also used in engineering in the construction of wharves and bridges, railway sleepers, cross-arms, poles, piles and mining timbers. In construction, it is used as an unseasoned timber in general house framing, seasoned dressed timber in cladding, internal and external flooring, linings and joinery, as well as for fencing, landscaping, retaining walls and structural plywood.

Spotted Gum in Flooring

There are a number of reasons why spotted gum is Australia’s most popular timber for floors. First, with a Janka Hardness Test rating of 11 and a heartwood level of class 2, it is the most durable of all Australian hardwoods. Having it readily available in so many colours, ranging from darker browns and reds to lighter blonder tones, makes it incredibly versatile, while the tone variance means that spotted gum can work with a lighter or darker interior decor. The black gum veins that run naturally through the boards add consistency and a beautiful natural contrast.

Being a naturally occurring product, no timber flooring will look the same, meaning that your spotted gum floor will be unique to your own home. Timber floors provide a natural insulation which will keep you warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer. Walking onto a spotted gum floor will instantly connect you to the calming energy of the Australian bush land.
